Talk: The Most Adventurous Kids in History
Presented By: Museum Volunteer George Canavan
In 1910, the Abernathy brothers, ages 6 and 10, set out on their own to meet Teddy Roosevelt. The whole country followed their journey as they rode horses to from Oklahoma to New York. It wasn’t even their first trek.
Speaker: A native of Long Island, NY and a graduate of Niagara University, George joined the Air Force in the Vietnam Era and worked in Aircraft Maintenance management on the B-52 flight lines of the Strategic Air Command in the USA and overseas. He achieved the rank of Captain before returning to civilian life and relocating to the Bay Area to join the emerging integrated circuit manufacturing revolution. A GI bill degree in Semiconductor Technology propelled his career as an engineer, manager, strategic planner and marketer. Employers included National Semiconductor, Amdahl Computers, Applied Materials, Lam Research, Microsoft and several startups.
In 2004, Canavan retired to Sparks, NV to pursue interests in vintage cars, hot rods and old motorcycles. He is president and co-founder of the Comstock Chapter Antique Motorcycle Club of America, and has held leadership positions in the Horseless Carriage Club of Nevada and the volunteers’ organization of the National Automobile Museum.
